Prerequisites and Recommendations

Operating SystemWindows 7 SP1, 8.1, or 10, or Windows Server 2008 R2 (including Windows Home Server 2011), Windows Server 2012 (including Windows Server Core) or higher.Windows 8.1 or 10, or Windows Server 2012 (including Windows Server Core) or higherWindows 10 1703 Pro (64bit) or Windows Server 2019 (including Windows Server Core).
Microsoft .NET FrameworkLindenberg Software Backup requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 at the minimum, but some features require 4.6.2 or higher. Newer versions are (mostly) backwards compatible to its predecessors 4.5.x and up, thus the general recommendation is to install the newest version available and also to rely on Windows Update.
Starting with Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 (or higher) is preinstalled, and on older systems you likely installed Microsoft .NET Framework with some other software. Therefore the installation of Lindenberg Software Backup does not include Microsoft .NET Framework in order to save space and download time. If the installation reports Microsoft .NET is missing or not the right version, then you can download and install Microsoft .NET Framework from microsoft.com.
Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Runtime.Depending on your Windows installation you need to download and install the 64bit Version or 32bit Version respectively. If you forget, download and install will be triggered on first application start.
Hyper-V ServicesOptionalRecommended. Not installing Hyper-V disables the virtual machine features and makes error analysis in some situations more difficult.

Installation

The installer for Lindenberg Software Backup is available from here. On first installation you will likely see a warning from SmartScreen Filter telling you that this software is not downloaded frequently and may be unsecure. Unfortunately you have to accept the risk for now - without significant income out of the software, I don´t want to spend money on an expensive certificate (which actually tells you only that someone was willing to spend money). Microsoft monitors the results and the more users download and install the software without reporting a problem afterwards, the better the ranking of the used certificate will become over time and at some point in time the warning will disappear.

At installation a certificate will be imported that will prevent warnings during daily use of backup.

Updates

Lindenberg Software Backup will update automatically whenever a newer version is available. For clients this is done after a backup. On servers this is done via the task "Lindenberg Software Backup Update Task" which is created automatically as a maintenance task.

Configuration

For secure operations you need server certificates. If you have no others, the easiest way to get to trusted certificates is to leverage Lights-Out, installing Lights-Out server on the same system as Lindenberg Software Backup server, and optionally Lights-Out clients on any Lindenberg Software Backup clients. The latter is optional, but of course this preconfigures trust in the servers certificate, and also gives you all the features of Lights-Out.

Please refer to Basic Operation for the minimum configuration of server and client, or to Configuration Options for all the details.
